Frequently asked questions

Does the Switch Retrostand work with both the OLED and Original Non-OLED Switch models?

YES Both the OLED (modern version of the Switch) and the original Non-OLED Switch (with the slightly smaller screen) are compatible with the Switch Retrostand.

The Non-OLED has a larger bezel due to its smaller screen size.

Below you can see my daughters Non-OLED Switch in use.

How long does each Retrostand take to build?

The short answer is about a week

The initial CAD designs and prototyping took approximately a month at a hobby pace of 1-2 hours a day. This portion is now done and a foundation for all current Retrostands.

These following timelines are a close approximation as each stand is a unique experience.

  • 10 hours - 3D Print (prints in 2 pieces for the switch stand and 3 pieces for the ipad mini stand.)
  • 1 hour - Assembly + line removal sanding
  • 1 hour - Spot patching + rough sanding
  • 1 hour - Sealing + airbrush priming (I tackle this in two sessions as one side needs to dry before I can work on the other.)
  • 1 hour - Fine sanding + first airbrush paint coat (Also in two sessions for the same reason as above.)
  • 1 hour - Fine sanding + hopefully last airbrush paint coat (Also in two sessions for the same reason as above.)
  • ½ hour - Emblem prep + pain (this is the most tedious part of the process and I need to improve it somehow, I may look into a resin printer in the future.)
  • 1 hour - Aging using a custom oil paint wash
  • ½ hour - Protective varnish
  • ½ hour - Photography of each individual stand
  • ½ hour - Listing each stand on the website (I custom coded the website and do not use a service such as Shopify. Why? I’m a nerd and I like programming.)
